What is Drip Irrigation?

What is drip irrigation?

Drip irrigation (or trickle irrigation) is a low volume, high efficiency watering system that is typically used in dry, water-scare regions. Water is slowly and precisely delivered to a particular area as opposed to a rotary sprinkler that broadly covers a large, open area. With a drip irrigation system, water is applied directly to the soil where it can quickly reach the root zone. This minimizes water waste, slows soil erosion, and reduces leaching.

How does it work?

Drip irrigation systems can be installed above the ground or below the surface. Narrow tubes are laid directly on the soil. They can be configured in any number of ways to provide even application to uniquely shaped areas. Small plastic emitters, that allow water to drip out slowly, are connected to the tube and regulate the flow of water.

How much water does it use?

Drip irrigation is very efficient and uses 30-50% less water than traditional lawn sprinkler systems. Although drip irrigation systems are typically found in commercial gardens and nurseries, they are becoming increasingly popular in residential areas and backyard vegetable gardens.
