What is a Sprinkler Zone?
A sprinkler zone (or circuit) is a group of sprinkler heads that run at the same time and are connected to a single control valve.
Why does the system need zones?
The zoning process should occur before any trenches are dug or pipes are installed. Zones are most often determined by location and watering needs. A zone located in a sunny area will likely need more water than another zone that is located in the shade. For instance, one zone may require an hour of watering each week and another zone may need 30 minutes of watering everyday.
How are the zones divided?
When dividing your lawn into zones, consider what time of day the area should be water and for how long. If the first zone is an area of open lawn, the second zone may be a small flowerbed, and the third zone could be an area of small trees or shrubs. Each zone is connected to a controller that sets the timing. One may run at 5 am and the other may not start until 10 am. The number of zones each yard can vary greatly. While some lawns only require 2 or 3 zones, other multiple acre lots may have 10 zones.
